Overnight stays en route

You can travel any day you wish, giving you a more leisurely journey and the chance to stay overnight en route. France offers a great range of hotel chains with consistent quality and often lower prices than those you’d pay in the UK.

Here are a few ideas:

From Calais or Dieppe: drive down to Disneyland Paris, easily accessible to the east of the city. Enjoy the magic kingdom for a day or two before driving on to Le Pas Opton. Or stay overnight in an historic city such as Rouen in the north, or Tours which is near the Loire valley. Take the longer drive down the Loire valley to take in some of the greatest chateaux and the scenery of this wine growing area.

From Caen, Le Havre or Cherbourg: visit historic Bayeux, home of the tapestry; find out about the Normandy landings of 1944 and visit the beaches and museums (Pegasus bridge, the first point in France to be liberated, is just ten minutes drive from the port of Caen). From Le Havre visit the fishing port of Honfleur, packed with places to eat and sights to see.

From St Malo and Roscoff: the walled town of St Malo welcomes you any time of day and if you’ve taken the night crossing, you’ll find cafes to serve you breakfast before you stroll around the city walls. The Office de Tourisme is adjacent to the main car park so pick up map and explore. Further afield, discover the beautiful Rance valley (famous for cider) and the pretty towns of Dinard and Dinan.

Wherever you drive from, the Mont St Michel is a sight never to be missed. It is France’s most visited place outside Paris. This tiny island is accessed by a causeway and it’s steep lanes lead up to an abbey. Fascinating to look around, it is also a spectacular sight as you approach, rising from the flat beaches of the bay.
